welcome to the end of 27
today's my final day as a 27-year-old. to celebrate, and because it's only fair, here's a look at the goals i set for myself this past year ... and how well (or poorly) i did at each.
1. take time daily for communion with God. there's no way i can say that i spent time with God every day this past year. no excuses ... but there's no way i can say it happened.
2. finish four quilts.
i finished one. post/pics can be seen here. i'm very close to having another one finished ... which gives me a start on my quilting goal for next year. :)
3. start (and complete) The Artist's Way i never started the book. a couple of my co-workers and i talked about doing it together, but it never happened. i mean, in all honesty, i never even LOOKED at the book this year, let alone started the weekly exercises.
you know - so far i've struck out on the first three. but i don't feel bad about this. things get better as you get farther in the list. :)
4. get a fun new hair cut.
i got two! in march i got 13" cut off and donated. and in november i got about 8" chopped off again - going shorter than my hair's been in a long time. i don't have a photo from the november haircut ... the photos are where my hair started this year and how it was cut in november. better, don't you think?
5. finish the Cornerstone Table. haven't touched it.
6. bring some order to the various "crafting" piles lying about. accomplished! when the basement flooded it sort of forced me to do some organizing and figure out what should be where.
7. learn to play poker. yeah, not so much. i mean, i understand the basics ... but i've never really played so i don't really KNOW the game.
8. visit three places i've never been before.
march - virgina for emily grace's first birthday party.
august - hearst castle in san simeon, california.
august - wave organ in san francisco, california.
i actually visited a lot of new places in california ... but those are two places where i really spent some time and visited.
9. lose 30 pounds. lost! i'm currently down 48 pounds & counting. i think you can tell a bit in the hair photos. but it could just be the haircut.
10. post my finished projects on craftster for feedback. i have posted 4 of my projects on craftster this year.
the corduroy bag i made for holly.
the record journal i made for carrie.
the "braided" necklaces i made in jewelry class.
the photo album i made for alicia.
the memory game i made for alyssa & emily.
11. go on a homemade t-shirt making binge. i did make a couple of shirts this year, but not a binge. i just got a set of screen-printing supplies for Christmas though ... so expect more t-shirts this year.
12. eat more veggies, less sugar, less salt. i definitely do not eat as much sugar as i ate a year ago. salt? well ... i do love my salt.
13. design and stick to an exercise routine. i did really well last summer. mom & i went to the track at least 3 times a week & started our day with some good power walking. then i slacked for a few months. now i'm back on track. but more about that in the list for this next year.
14. e-mail/send letters to friends i haven't spoken to recently. i have made contact with some folks i hadn't spoken to in a long time. and it's been good. yay for the world of blogging!
15. watch less television. i do watch less television. and when i'm in front of the tv i'm almost always doing something as i watch ... very little time is spent JUST watching tv.
16. take three art classes.
i took a glass-bead-making class this past spring. and i just finished my beaded-jewelry-making class. so i'm one short, but it's still 2 more than i took the year before.
17. catch up my photo albums. yeah, not so much. i caught them up to May '06, and they've sat there ever since.
18. read six books i've never read before.i read jesus land and that's it. i mean, i read my mental_floss every 2 months, but since it's a magazine it doesn't count.
19. make goodies to sell at a craft fair. nope. although i have started making jewelry to sell at the popcorn festival this summer.
20. create handmade surprises to mail to the special little people in the land of Far Away. nope. but wouldn't it have been great if i had?
21. (secret - will post about it when it's done). i ran into some technical issues on this one. i won't reveal it yet because i want to try & get them resolved.
22. make puppets/stuffed animals for the special little people for Christmas. i did MAKE Christmas presents this year, but they weren't puppets/stuffed animals.
23. update my portfolio and keep it updated. nope. i didn't even update my portfolio when i interviewed & switched positions this past fall. shame on me.
24. make and decorate at least one fancy cake. i made a flourless chocolate cake for mom's birthday last year. it was delightful. too bad i didn't think to take a photo. i poured chocolate ganache over the top and pulled a white-chocolate spiral through it ... served it with fried bananas and fresh whipped cream. mmmmm.
25. participate in illustration friday at least once a month. yeah, turns out i'm not as interested in participating as i thought i was. i thought it would be a good exercise for me ... get my creative juices flowing. not so much. i did take a crack at a couple of the topics, but decided it just wasn't for me. i do like seeing what other people did though - illustration friday site.
26. send out handmade Christmas cards. don't feel left out ... no one got a Christmas card from me this year. not handmade, not store bought.
27. take photos every week, with a total of at least 2700 for the year didn't get this accomplished either. i haven't added up a final count ... but it's less than 2000. i was at 1509 after the holidays, and i've only taken photos a few times since then. so probably note even 1650. i'd say i suck ... but the photos i got were pretty good. and about a third of the photos i took this year were taken while i was in california. and i think my trip to california may have been my favorite accomplishment this year. i'm glad i took that trip by myself.
so there you have it. my 27th year in review. stay tuned for The Great 28!
