meet greggles & kim-kim

i made these little monsters for my college buddy greg and his fiance kim (see her veil?). they're made of scrap materials i had lying about, and they've got rice in their cabooses to help them sit up. greggles actually sits up better than kim-kim, but i think that's because he has a wider base. regardless, they were fun to make and well received by the giftees. the bands around their boxes read as follows ...

greggles
born during a violent thunderstorm, greggles likes to eat butterflies, hug strangers and dance in the dark. he’s happiest when he sees people crying as they laugh.

kim-kim
kim-kim is a tea-party hostess from a distant planet. she attributes her success to her polka-dotted stockings. beware of kim-kim’s tea cookies - just one of them can make you silly for up to 60 days.

these are just the first of many little monsters to come. i'm hoping they'll sell at the popcorn festival. i'll post 'em as i make 'em. i've got some fun ideas!

i'm planning my next big road trip for either april or may. last year i drove san diego north to san francisco (photo above). this year i'm going to fly into either portland or seattle, rent a car and drive my way south along the coast to san francisco. i could fly into san francisco & drive north to portland ... but if i end up with extra days before my flight home i want to spend them in sf. i do love sf.

so ...

anyone have places i should definitely visit? i'm thinking mendocino is a must, since erin's wedding photos are simply gorgeous. and i want to visit the redwood forest. but i don't know anything about the coast of oregon. i know i want to visit astoria (the oregon town where the movie 'the goonies' was filmed), but past that i have no idea what i'm in for. anyone been there or heard stories from there that you want to share?

they won!

in jamie's words... they won big. thanks to everyone who voted for jamie & faith to get free wedding photography!

julie - now do you feel like you did a good thing? :)

fred - yes, same jamie. i believe his comment to us was something like "yeah, i think i saw you guys chillin' like bob dylan on the stairs between shows" ...

what does it say about me that i had to look up bob dylan's name to spell it correctly?

welcome to the end of 27

today's my final day as a 27-year-old. to celebrate, and because it's only fair, here's a look at the goals i set for myself this past year ... and how well (or poorly) i did at each.

1. take time daily for communion with God. there's no way i can say that i spent time with God every day this past year. no excuses ... but there's no way i can say it happened.

2. finish four quilts.

i finished one. post/pics can be seen here. i'm very close to having another one finished ... which gives me a start on my quilting goal for next year. :)

3. start (and complete) The Artist's Way i never started the book. a couple of my co-workers and i talked about doing it together, but it never happened. i mean, in all honesty, i never even LOOKED at the book this year, let alone started the weekly exercises.

you know - so far i've struck out on the first three. but i don't feel bad about this. things get better as you get farther in the list. :)

4. get a fun new hair cut.

i got two! in march i got 13" cut off and donated. and in november i got about 8" chopped off again - going shorter than my hair's been in a long time. i don't have a photo from the november haircut ... the photos are where my hair started this year and how it was cut in november. better, don't you think?

5. finish the Cornerstone Table. haven't touched it.

6. bring some order to the various "crafting" piles lying about. accomplished! when the basement flooded it sort of forced me to do some organizing and figure out what should be where.

7. learn to play poker. yeah, not so much. i mean, i understand the basics ... but i've never really played so i don't really KNOW the game.

8. visit three places i've never been before.

march - virgina for emily grace's first birthday party.
august - hearst castle in san simeon, california.
august - wave organ in san francisco, california.
i actually visited a lot of new places in california ... but those are two places where i really spent some time and visited.

9. lose 30 pounds. lost! i'm currently down 48 pounds & counting. i think you can tell a bit in the hair photos. but it could just be the haircut.

10. post my finished projects on craftster for feedback. i have posted 4 of my projects on craftster this year.
the corduroy bag i made for holly.
the record journal i made for carrie.
the "braided" necklaces i made in jewelry class.
the photo album i made for alicia.
the memory game i made for alyssa & emily.

11. go on a homemade t-shirt making binge. i did make a couple of shirts this year, but not a binge. i just got a set of screen-printing supplies for Christmas though ... so expect more t-shirts this year.

12. eat more veggies, less sugar, less salt. i definitely do not eat as much sugar as i ate a year ago. salt? well ... i do love my salt.

13. design and stick to an exercise routine. i did really well last summer. mom & i went to the track at least 3 times a week & started our day with some good power walking. then i slacked for a few months. now i'm back on track. but more about that in the list for this next year.

14. e-mail/send letters to friends i haven't spoken to recently. i have made contact with some folks i hadn't spoken to in a long time. and it's been good. yay for the world of blogging!

15. watch less television. i do watch less television. and when i'm in front of the tv i'm almost always doing something as i watch ... very little time is spent JUST watching tv.

16. take three art classes.

i took a glass-bead-making class this past spring. and i just finished my beaded-jewelry-making class. so i'm one short, but it's still 2 more than i took the year before.

17. catch up my photo albums. yeah, not so much. i caught them up to May '06, and they've sat there ever since.

18. read six books i've never read before.i read jesus land and that's it. i mean, i read my mental_floss every 2 months, but since it's a magazine it doesn't count.

19. make goodies to sell at a craft fair. nope. although i have started making jewelry to sell at the popcorn festival this summer.

20. create handmade surprises to mail to the special little people in the land of Far Away. nope. but wouldn't it have been great if i had?

21. (secret - will post about it when it's done). i ran into some technical issues on this one. i won't reveal it yet because i want to try & get them resolved.

22. make puppets/stuffed animals for the special little people for Christmas. i did MAKE Christmas presents this year, but they weren't puppets/stuffed animals.

23. update my portfolio and keep it updated. nope. i didn't even update my portfolio when i interviewed & switched positions this past fall. shame on me.

24. make and decorate at least one fancy cake. i made a flourless chocolate cake for mom's birthday last year. it was delightful. too bad i didn't think to take a photo. i poured chocolate ganache over the top and pulled a white-chocolate spiral through it ... served it with fried bananas and fresh whipped cream. mmmmm.

25. participate in illustration friday at least once a month. yeah, turns out i'm not as interested in participating as i thought i was. i thought it would be a good exercise for me ... get my creative juices flowing. not so much. i did take a crack at a couple of the topics, but decided it just wasn't for me. i do like seeing what other people did though - illustration friday site.

26. send out handmade Christmas cards. don't feel left out ... no one got a Christmas card from me this year. not handmade, not store bought.

27. take photos every week, with a total of at least 2700 for the year didn't get this accomplished either. i haven't added up a final count ... but it's less than 2000. i was at 1509 after the holidays, and i've only taken photos a few times since then. so probably note even 1650. i'd say i suck ... but the photos i got were pretty good. and about a third of the photos i took this year were taken while i was in california. and i think my trip to california may have been my favorite accomplishment this year. i'm glad i took that trip by myself.

so there you have it. my 27th year in review. stay tuned for The Great 28!

christmas for kim

i made this quilt for my mom's sister kim. and to make up for not using photos in the past few posts, you get two of the quilt! everyone cheer!

the quilt top is a variety of greens and reds (including corduroy. i love corduroy.) and the back is a micro-suede-type fabric with silver sequin snowflakes. i quilted by hand along each of the rows/columns to make each square have some poof (you can see the hand-stitching best on the back of the quilt). i signed it with '07 because i was a little behind getting it finished. but i completed it on her birthday - so it became a birthmas present!

just don't try using birthmas in a scrabble game.

memory in action

if you'll notice the fairy skirts in this picture (emily's wearing hers, alyssa's is the pink/purple fluffy mass on the floor- they're the gifts my mom made them for Christmas. they're ADORABLE. and the girls loved them.

suggestions for my 28th birthday goals include:
- get reaquainted with friends i've lost contact with (jody)
- trip to texas (erin)
- volunteer somewhere (jody)
- go out to dinner with fred (fred)
- stop in colorado on my way to texas (laure)
- the mustard challenge (laure)

the mustard challenge was originally taken up by my brother, but he claims he "didn't have time" to finish it. the challenge is to eat a gallon of mustard in one week. any kind of mustard, in any combinations.

my birthday's the 24th. so i've still got a couple of weeks to decide. which also means i have just a couple of weeks to finish up on last year's list. yikes.

still taking suggestions. what do you think i should do this year? :)

the great 28

with my birthday coming up, i'm soliciting ideas for my list of goals to accomplish this year. i've got some ideas already (like learning to play at least one Christmas carol on my accordian), but i've still got a lot of goal-seeing to do ... so leave a comment with something you think i should do this year. it can be serious or silly. abstract or concrete. a book i should read. a movie i should watch. something you want to see here on the site. anything at all.

now comment with an idea!

and thank you. :)

Christmas ornaments

so you may have read that i've recently found an affinity towards beading. well, i was skiddish of making jewelry for people for Christmas because it's so subjective. but i wanted to make something for my parents, sisters and brothers. so i made these beaded star ornaments. they're about 4" tall, and i hung them with a sheer silver ribbon. everyone seemed to like them, and they were a lot of fun to make.

i want to try making some pendants with the same technique, but a lot smaller, to use for jewelry. april and i are going to have a booth at a craft fair this summer (we ARE going to do it), and i'm thinking i'll try the necklaces for that. then i can just make a bunch of jewelry that i think is fun, and people can choose their own gift. and pay for it. :)

speaking of craft fairs - i added sandi's etsy shop to my "'becca recommends" list. sandi does fantastic illustrations and makes them into the cutest baby clothes you ever did see. she had a booth at a weekly european market last summer, and we bought one of her "you need a little bug hug" onesies for my niece. she's the one who suggested the specific craft fair this summer. check out her shop. she's adding new stuff daily, and i LOVE the milk monster!

Christmas for alyssa & emily

my cousins alyssa and emily are 4 and almost 2, respectively. for Christmas i made them a customized memory game using photos of everyone in their family (grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins - both sides of the family). it's made out of felt & vinyl, like alicia's photo album. there's a total of 36 pieces (18 photos, two pieces with each photo for matching). i even made a box for it to store in. well, i got a papier mache box, cut it down to size and covered it in felt. but you know what i mean.

alyssa really enjoyed playing. we spread all the pieces out after she opened it & played 4 or 5 games that night. it was a lot of fun. emily's a little young to play, but she liked looking at all the pictures. and i think it will be a fun way for them to remember who's who in the family. they live in virginia and only see us a few times a year. so i hope this will be a lot of fun for them. i know i enjoyed making it. now it's up to them to enjoy playing with it. :)
